FIRST STATE DETACHMENT, MARINE CORPS LEAGUE MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES FOR WED, 25 January 2012

Commandant Wise kicked off meeting at 1930 with introduction of guest speaker, Ms Audrey Killen, and her friend which the Adjutant did not get the name of, Ms Killen represents and is the Executive Director of "Operation Shooting Star" whose purpose(s) deals with persons suffering from MS and related diseases. Her talk was informative. The Commandant presented her a donation for $100 from the Detachment in support of her valuable work. This was followed by the opening ceremony by noting colors had been posted, citing of pledge to our flag, and an opening prayer by Chaplain Deickman. All officers and appointees were present with exception of JV Stephen Siltman, who was on authorized absence and out in the field.

There were no new applications for membership. Marine Michael Burns was sworn in as a new Detachment and MCL member. This was followed by membership voting to waive the reading of past monthly membership minutes.

Correspondence from "Semper Fi Fund" leadership was read by PC Stevenson, thanking the Detachment for continued monetary support. Commandant Wise received a newsletter from "4 Step Program" which deals with handicapped individuals and horse riding, a program which we have supported monetarily in the past. It was voted on and passed by membership to continue our support and to donate $100 for their cause.

Paymaster Tanner reported the following: as of 31 January 2012, Beginning Balance in checking account $18,716.51; Deposits $1,002.00; Deductions $1,820.21 and Ending Balance of $17,899.30. The Detachment earned $171.24 interest from USAA savings bank account during 2011. WOW!

Commandant reported and spoke on the following subjects during the meeting at various times. 1) Recruiting posters are on order and will be distributed for posting throughout our Area of Responsibility (AOR). 2) Certificates of Appreciation for jobs well done regarding this past year's work with Toys for Tots (TFT) will be presented to a long list of members in the near future. He then read their names and verbally gave a personal "Thank You". TFT Carey will chair this Committee during 2012. 3) Commandant Wise once again and very sincerely praised and thanked all those members who work so hard on our many committees, projects and various causes. He then went on and encouraged those who have been holding back to join in the fun and step forward to assist those who are already involved. 4) He then went on with input from Marine Kessler to discuss the OC Optimist Club, their support of the Detachment, and our support of their efforts. The upcoming "Boat Show" and the purchasing of a chance for $100 ticket on a booth at the show with monies collected for support of the OC/Berlin Youth Foundation to benefit the Stephen Decatur HS Scholarship Fund. I believe a motion was made and passed for the donation. 5) Other Detachments will be invited to join us in the 4th of July, Bethany Beach parade. They will march with us behind our banner and colors.

Senior Vice Hughes reported he has three (3) potential members out there somewhere and hopes to make further contact. The "yellow" attention getting recruiting card to be placed on vehicles was discussed with it being noted the address for our meetings was printed as "61st St" instead of the correct "66th St". SV has utilized these recruiting cards with hopefully good results.

Judge Advocate Strickland commented on our and National By Laws and is keeping the membership advised of any noteable changes.

Quartermaster Stevenson reported he has a "new" issue of Detachment ball covers and golf shirts. Prices are good......get 'em while in stock. He also has plenty of the aformentioned yellow recruiting cards for members to put out there.

Web Sergeant/Public Relations Marine Mathers reported we cannot be too cautious about what info we put on our PCs and/or give out to "strangers". This cannot be over emphasized! He also requested that any member who has info that is useful for publication regarding events and other material to contact him for publication on our web site.

TFT Chair Carey gave a concise report on this past year's very successful program.

Physical Fitness Chair Wright gave report about upcoming tests at local schools and informed new members and those unaware of this program of it's value. Details per dates and locations will be posted by WS/PR Mathers in near future.

Golf Tournament Chair Rose gave an up to date report on the scheduled tournament taking place at the OC Golf Course on Thursday, 21 June 2012. This will be our 7th annual fund raising event and is expected to break past records for participation. Committee meetings have taken place with more to be scheduled. All is on track thanks to the dedication and efforts of Bob Rose and his squad.

Marine Kline, NCOIC of OC Convention Center booth activities is optimistic about the many events scheduled for the coming months. He, along with Commandant Wise, sounded off on how much fun and easy to spend some time in our booth, collecting bucks for the Semper Fi Fund , meeting folks, doing some recruiting, etc. They encouraged more participation......get on board, Marines!

PM Tanner reported on Detachment Challenge Coins with input from SAA Conlon. He also reported the "guest speaker" for next month will be from "The Arbor at Ocean Pines". This organization cares for the elderly and veterans.

The soon to take place elections for 2012 was mentioned by Commandant Wise.

SAA Conlon reported on the 11 May 2012 Installation/Appreciation Banquet, taking place at Bear Trap, same as in years past, more info to be posted later.

Marine Davis commented on the "Boosters" from the OC Dept of Recreation of their need and his requests for more participation from the Detachment. They are having a couple of social events in the immediate future to thank those who worked the "Winter Festival of Lights" dates and place are unknown with info to follow. He stated he is getting "too busy" to continue working by himself and with only a few Marines and "begged" for more volunteers. He went on later to suggest the Detachment get involved with having all OC merchants put out US Flags on holidays and when appropriate. Commandant Wise recognized and supported Davis on this, however, expressed his pessimism for participation.

Closing ceremonies were conducted, final salue to flag and closing prayer.

The meeting was dismissed/adjourned at 2105, next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 22 Feb 2012. Thirty four (34) members present.

Respectfully Submitted:

Jack Rine, Adjutant
